Religion and Science Reinforcing Each Other
Some see conflicts between science and religion that really are not there, in my opinion. I see them as 2 facets of reality, one mainly material in nature, one mainly spiritual. But the truth is truth.
Reading this book, “Wonder Drug” by Stephen Trzeciak, M.D. and Anthony Mazzarelli, M. D., cements my belief that science and religion can work together. The authors looked objectively at our American culture to see a society of self-centeredness, self-absorption, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and suicide. They came up to the radical conclusion that serving others and social interaction are the best medicine to make us content and long living. Connection and serving others help us mentally, emotionally, and physically. It gets us out of ourselves and reduces stress.
As a believer, I could have told them that!
- The Golden Rule is in all religions – be good to others! Help them, heal them, support them and strengthen them. We are living good lives when we are serving others.
- Religion is community – all religions revolve around a community, living the teachings of their faith together with love, understanding, and support. A strong community supports all members in all aspects of their lives.
- Looking deeply inside of ourselves, we find the Creator, and our Holy Books encourage us to be selfless, giving, open, and to be kind. These qualities naturally lead us to the Golden Rule and community, to find joy and contentment in serving others.
Let us be more curious about science as believers and more curious, in general, about the world around us. Science is ever-changing, and we need to be as well. We all have ideas, prejudices, and assumptions that we need to rethink. By doing so, we can grow emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.
