The Day of Ashura commemorates, for Shi’a Muslims, a day of mourning for the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the prophet Muhammad.
Dates are based on a lunar calendar and may not coincide with the Julian/solar calendar dates listed by +/- 1 day. Religious observances begin the evening prior and into the day listed.
